Riikka Purra re-elected as Finns Party leader

Debate over immigration dominated both the Finns Party congress in Lahti and the Swedish People's Party gathering in Vaasa.

Riikka Purra will continue as the chair of the Finns Party after securing a clear victory in the party's leadership election on Saturday.

A total of 876 votes were cast in the election. Purra received 730 votes, while her challenger, Arto Luukkanen, drew 126 votes.

Following her re-election as chair, Purra expressed confidence in the party’s future.

"We will become a major force, and we will save this country," she added.

Purra serves as finance minister in Petteri Orpo's (NCP) government.

Addressing her party's falling backing, Purra said the slump was partly due to the weak state of the economy.

In her opening remarks at the party congress in Lahti, Purra suggested that Finnish identity was under attack.

"Mass immigration from developing countries, along with migration that burdens public services and the social and healthcare systems, will lead to the collapse of the welfare state," she told party delegates.

MP Teemu Keskisarja was elected as the first deputy chair of the Finns Party, with MP Joakim Vigelius chosen as the second.

Last winter, Orpo criticised Keskisarja for joining a far-right Independence Day march instead of attending the presidential gala, calling it a publicity stunt.

Vigelius, for his part, said the party should prioritise stricter immigration policies for the rest of the parliamentary term and voiced criticism of the NCP's current spending cut priorities.

Adlercreutz: "We have too many racists"

Meanwhile in Vaasa, where the Swedish People's Party is staging its leadership election this weekend, SPP party chair Anders Adlercreutz rejected simplified immigration narratives.

"Finland's problem is not that we have too many immigrants. It's not that too many people want to come here. It's not that we're providing healthcare to too many. Do you know what Finland's real problem is? Our problem is that we have too many racists," he said.

On Sunday, the SPP congress will elect the party leader as well as three deputy chairs.
