Discount coach company OnniBus has announced plans to trial a premium bus service in Finland.

OnniBus is partnering with the Estonian-based premium bus service firm Lux Express in the roughly one-year trial, which will begin on 19 June.

The first "Lux Express by OnniBus" direct routes will be Helsinki–Turku and Helsinki–Jyväskylä.

The coaches feature seats with extra legroom, as well as personal video screens offering passengers "up-to-date" entertainment. They will also have a so-called lounge area, where passengers can pay extra for comforts like leather seats and more personal space.

"Our customer research clearly shows that most OnniBus passengers value affordability above all," OnniBus' CEO Joona Hurmerinta said in a press release issued on Wednesday.

"We remain committed to offering the best price-to-quality ratio on the market with our standard OnniBus services. At the same time, we believe there’s a growing demand for a premium travel concept — one that offers more comfort, yet remains competitively priced compared to other modes of transport," he continued.

The company plans to expand the premium service on its Helsinki–Tampere and Helsinki–Kotka routes in August.
