The latest extension to the Helsinki-region metro system opened on Saturday, with the far western Espoo suburb of Kivenlahti now reachable.
In addition to Kivenlahti, there are now stations at Finnoo, Kaitaa, Soukka and Espoonlahti. The first train departing from Kivenlahti left at 4:56 am, and was packed with passengers including a large group of students who joined the fun.
Concerts, cake and coffee were planned to christen the new stations with a special event taking place at the Lippulaiva shopping centre.
The Finnoo station is now home to Finland's longest escalator.
Metro trains first started running in the capital in 1982, when the line ran between the Central Railway Station and Itäkeskus. Extensions to Ruoholahti and Vuosaari opened in 1993 and 1998 respectively.
The delayed and much-anticipated extension to Espoo arrived in two stages, with the first section to Matinkylä opening in 2017.
Some 1.16 billion euros has been budgeted for the extension project.
