Finnish police have launched a preliminary investigation in connection to some 2,000 undelivered packages in the west coast town of Pori. The mail delivery disruptions have mainly affected residents in eastern districts of the town.
The undelivered packages were found unopened in a locker of a Posti employee in May. It is estimated that the shipped items should have been distributed between May 2019 and February 2020.
According to the investigators, this is a rare incident.
"We have not investigated a similar case before, at least in Satakunta," said superintendent Toni Sjöblom of the South-west Finland Police Department.
The postal worker was described by police as young and inexperienced. They are no longer employed by Posti.
Police and Posti ensured that every undelivered package was found.
The recipients of the missing packages have also been detected and will be contacted by letter. The letter will also provide guidelines for claiming compensation in criminal damages.
