The captain of Finland's men's football team, Tim Sparv, is to see out the 2021 season in Helsinki with HJK, after agreeing a short-term deal with the reigning champions.

The contract includes an option to stay at HJK in 2022, with Sparv initially seeking match fitness after undergoing knee surgery before the European Championships.

Sparv last played in Finland 13 years ago, when he was at Vaasan Palloseura, on loan from Swedish club Halmstads BK.

"It feels really good to come back to Finland," said Sparv, who started his professional career in Southampton's academy. "I have been abroad for 18 years altogether, that's a long time. Now is the right moment to come home to Finland. I am really proud that I get to represent 'Klubi' from this moment on."

"Like all other players, I have thought about what the next stage of my career would be. This summer there were a few good options, but this was the best possible for me and also for my family. HJK is an ambitious club, professional and it is a good place for me mentally. I believe I'll enjoy it here."

Last season Sparv played in Greece for AEL. In addition to Greece and Sweden, during his career he has played for clubs in Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, and he started out in the youth team at Norrvalla FF in Ostrobothnia.

He's also played 83 times for the Finnish national team.
